27 Players in squad to face Saudi Arabia & Vietnam

Surprise Call-up: Eid (c) will be looked for for goals.
Ahmad El-Hassan has called up 28 players, nine of whom ply their trade abroad, for next month's upcoming friendlies versus Saudi Arabia and Vietnam.

Abdelatif Bahdari, Ashraf Nu'man, and Ramzi Saleh will join WBPL-based players for an internal training camp. The squad will then travel to Saudi Arabia on November 2nd where they will meet up with the rest of the foreign contingent.

Palestine are set to face Saudi Arabia and Vietnam on November 6th and 9th, respectively. An additional friendly vs. Thailand was cancelled due to the PFA's refusal to travel to Thailand.

Three new players are set to debut with the national team all of whom play abroad. Mahmoud Eid and Imad Khalili are set to bolster Palestine's attack.

Khalili's debut has been anticipated ever since his loan stint at Al-Shabab in the the Saudi Pro League. Mahmoud Eid, on the other hand, came out of nowhere- the 21-year old currently suits up for Nyköping BIS in the Swedish third tier. His recent form has been excellent with three goals to his name in his last five games.

Daniel Kabir Mustafá was called-up for this series of friendlies but declined for uncited reasons. Other notable absences include Adham Abu Rwais and Hilal Musa. While Tamer Salah continues to be preferred over the likes of the more established Khaled Mahdi.

After a lengthy spell on the sidelines it has been confirmed that Imad Zatara will indeed miss the Asian Cup. Palestine's leading scorer Fahed Attal seems also destined to miss the tournament with his form at Shabab Al-Khaleel failing to convince the coaching staff.

Also on the injury front, Alexis Norambuena made his return to the pitch for GKS Belchatow this week and should get a run out. Javier Cohene, might be a late scratch having picked up an injury in training with his club side Borac Cacak.

Is Ahmed El-Hassan really Palestine's new manager?

Ahmed El-Hassan rocking some free AFC swag

Palestine are on the verge of making history with their participation in their first ever major international tournament. Unfortunately, Jamal Mahmoud's sudden resignation has left them scrambling to find a manager capable of selecting, preparing, and leading a group of 23 players who will be viewed by hundreds of millions of people across the Asian continent.

More after the jump...

After a month long search, PFA President Jibril Rajoub appointed a man who works in the same building. Ahmed El-Hassan is an unassuming figure with limited coaching experience who most recently held an administrative position overseeing coaching for the PFA.

His previous coaching experience doesn't look particularly impressive. He was in charge briefly at a pre-WBPL Al-Am'ary in 2006. The next year, he was the assistant manager to Nelson Dekmak whose one-game tenure coincided with Palestine's worst result in a competitive fixture- a 4-0 loss to Singapore in 2010 World Cup qualifying.

He resurfaced again, three years later, to take over the the Hilal Jericho post but resigned five games into the season after a four game losing streak with the team bottom of the table.

An atrocious coaching record aside, Ahmed El-Hassan does have one thing going for him- An AFC 'A' Coaching License.

This is important because it is the one thing that would prevent former Palestine captain Saeb Jendeya from leading the team out in Australia. Interestingly enough, Saeb Jendeya, Makram Dabdoub and Firas Abu Radwan have retained their positions, maybe to ensure continuity, but probably because the PFA is not interested in fully handing the reigns over to Ahmed El-Hassan.

Many things about this appointment are fishy- such as the fact that the PFA issued a denial that Ahmed El-Hassan had been handed the job days before he was appointed. Moreover, if Jamal Mahmoud's replacement was in the building why wasn't Ahmed El-Hassan handed the role before the friendlies vs. India and Pakistan?

If you need anymore evidence that this appointment is nothing more than an adminstrative move designed to avoid the wrath of the AFC, look no further than the official press release. Ahmed El-Hassan's name makes a single appearance- and it's buried in the third paragraph.

Barring an unexpected change of heart from Jamal Mahmoud this is quite explicitly Saeb Jendeya's team going forward.

Countdown to Australia [84 days]: Getting around

Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation back in 2007 after forty years of being a big whale in the small ocean of the OFC. With their only real competitor being New Zealand. and qualifying matches which saw them set records (the famous 31-0 vs. Samoa which inspired the title for James Montagues recent world cup book), they decided being in the OFC was holding them back. The OFC's "1/2" spot in the world cup didn't do them any good either having only qualified as an OFC member twice in 1974 and 2006 (they have a 100% qualifying record since joining the AFC). Australia reached the final of the 2011 Asian Cup but lost 1-0 to Japan. Australia was the sole bidder to host the 2015 edition and is eyeing winning the trophy at home.

Needless to say, it will be a special tournament for Palestine as well. And who would've thought we'd have to fly all the way to Australia to watch our nation's first Asian Cup. If you plan on making the trip, this post is for you.

Tickets are sold on the Asian Cup website and those to Palestine's group games cost AUD30 at most. Those who plan on supporting loudly and close to other Palestine fans, we encourage you to choose the "Active Supporter Zone". You can have the tickets delivered by mail or available for pickup once you get there.

Palestine play Japan in Newcastle which is 162km from Sydney, so you might want to consider Sydney as your base for the first leg of the trip. It takes about three hours from Sydney to Newcastle on the Central Coast and Newcastle railway line.

Next, Palestine plays Jordan in Melbourne. We did the research: you are best off flying there (its cheaper than rail and takes much less time).

Melbourne's Rectangular Stadium will host Palestine vs. Jordan

Palestine's final group game against Iraq will be in Canberra, the Australian capital. Again, unless you fancy an 8 hour road trip, you might as well get on a plane to get there.

There, now you know enough to broadly plan your trip. What you do between matches is up to you.

A final note: be sure to join the Asian Cup Palestine Support Group on Facebook.

Takeaways from Palestine's Tour of South Asia

Ashraf Nu'man opens the scoring against India
It's hard to gauge a team when logistics prevent you from watching their last four friendlies. Needless to say, Palestine are not flying high as they were on May 30th, 2014. In the long run, a dose of realism might be what the team needs in order to realize the task ahead of them. Here is what we learned from the friendlies against India and Pakistan:

Ramzi Saleh is the Starting Goalkeeper

Thaqafi Tulkarem netminder Rami Hammadeh is the flavor of the month after his fine performances for the Olympic Team but this is Ramzi's team. Whatever murmurs existed about the captain's decline were quashed earlier in the year when he conceded a solitary goal against Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Maldives, Afghanistan and Philippines.

Yes, Saleh conceded five times against Chinese Taipei and India but he probably made his own fair share of saves as well. In any case, the keeper posted a clean sheet against Pakistan- one that helped Palestine win their third game on the trot (and seventh game of the year).

The Double Pivot is here to stay
Murad Ismail opens the scoring

For whatever reason, Palestine seem incapable of playing expansively without exposing themselves in the rearguard. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, the tactical wrinkle's best iteration has come with Murad Ismail and Khader Yousef playing alongside each other- both of whom scored winning goals this past week. If the aim is to get the best eleven players at the same time, then the double pivot seems the way to go.

Roster Competition not Very Competitive

Here's a fun exercise- pick any team amongst this year's World Cup finalists and compare the roster in their final qualifying game to the one fielded in Brazil. You would be shocked to see some of the changes that happened in less than a year. Lucas Neill didn't captain Australia, Samir Nasri didn't feature for France, Landon Donovan was mercilessly axed by Klinsmann, and Ever Banega's starting role for Argentina in World Cup Qualifying counted for nothing when Sabella selected his final 23.

Will we see a big name miss out on Australia? Probably not. In fact, a handful of fringe players were sent home early from camp as they weren't going to get playing time in the match vs. Pakistan. Olympic Teamers Ahmed Miary and Mahmoud Abu Warda were longshots to begin with but the Ahmad Abdullah and Houssam Wadi cannot be feeling good about their chances.

Abdullah was considered a viable leftback option 12 months ago but that was before Abed Jaber burst onto the scene. It's obvious that the managerial team wants to get the young player as many minutes as possible. Wadi might still have an outside chance but Palestine already has plenty of cover. Haitham Dheeb was also amongst those jettisoned but he cited work commitments.

Other than Harbi slotting in for Dheeb, the lineups against India and Pakistan were identical. Ramzi, Saleh, Bahdari, Raed Fares, Abed Jaber, Murad Ismail, Khader Yousef, Husam Abu Saleh, Ashraf Nu'man, Ahmed Maher, and Abdelhamid Abuhabib all got two starts during this trip.

The only other players to make an appearance were: Adham Abu Rwais, Mus'ab Al-Battat, Hesham Salhe, and Khaled Salem.

The most impactful player was Khaled Salem (who is a long shot to make the roster)- whose introduction resulted in Palestine taking the lead in both games. He may not have scored but he did provide us with a glimpse of the work he could do. Needless to say, Palestine could be a lot more attacking with Ashraf Nu'man in space on the wing and a specialist scoring the goals.

Hopefully, the inclusion of more players plying their trade abroad makes this aspect of Asian Cup preparation a little more intriguing.

PFA puts players and managers in positions to fail.

Haitham Dheeb wearing Mus'ab Al-Battat's shirt presumably because the PFA spent money on things other than  shirts.

It takes 1 hour and 10 minutes to fly from New Dehli to Lahore. It took our national team ten times as long because the PFA couldn't book a direct route. So instead our players flew back to Doha in order to transfer planes and fly to Lahore. Brilliant.

This is after they figured out that they could only play half the games they scheduled for this period. Nice.

We still don't know who the manager is.

Saeb Jendeya doesn't have all his coaching badges so someone else will have to take over from the mustachioed wonder. That is, unless, the former captain can get certified before the start of the tournament in January. There were multiple reports that Ahmed El-Hassan- a manager who had coached at various levels within the PFA structure- had been appointed. Mr. El-Hassan has since issued a denial of the report.

All signs point to the inevitable takeover by Abdel-Nasser Barakat but we have yet to see any action on that front.
