23 Tickets to Australia: Battle for final places begins to heat up

Amour: Back in the mix
Palestine showed enough in two friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Vietnam to calm the fears of many doubters still fretting about Jamal Mahmoud's departure.

Palestine were clearly second best against Saudi Arabia in the first half but showed some sparks in the second half. They built on that performance three days later against Vietnam; overpowering their opponents in the second half.

The two friendlies did raise some intriguing questions about roster spots. Mahmoud Eid has come out of nowhere and now seems likely to lead the attack for Al-Fida'i  in their Asian Cup debut against Japan in Newcastle. Hesham Salhe's energetic performance against Vietnam have many clamoring to an end of the Murad Ismail-Khader Yousef partnership in midfield.

More Analysis After the jump....

GOALKEEPERS

Ramzi Saleh (On the Plane): Captain. Unquestioned Starter.

Toufic Ali (On the Plane): Coaching staff committed to him as the backup goalkeeper went the full 90' against

Rami Hammadeh (On the Plane): Palestine could call on a host of veterans to take this role but Hamamdeh's performance during the Asian Games give him the edge.

DEFENDERS

RIGHT BACK

Raed Fares (On the Plane): Hung out to dry against Saudi Arabia but Fares has been the unquestioned starter at right back for nearly two years.

Mus'ab Battat (Probably Going): Young player with a lot of upside- only four caps to his name but has risen to the challenge when given the opportunity.

Ahmed Harbi (On the bubble): Harbi is versatile and that could be his greatest asset- he could conceivably play further up the pitch or as a center back. Harbi is working his way back into the squad- playing for an Israeli club for 18 months meant he was exiled in the build up to the Challenge Cup.

LEFT BACK

Abed Jaber (On the Plane): Came out of nowhere to help power Palestine to the Challenge Cup title. Passed litmus test against stiffer opposition (Saudi Arabia) will most likely force Alexis Norambuena to play at right back.

Alexis Norambuena (On the Plane): He'll start but the question is: On which flank?

Musa Abu Jazar (On the bubble): Can play as a holding midfielder. Did alright as a left back vs. Vietnam but has a catalogue full of horrible games for the national team at that position. Oddly enough he's probably in competition with Ahmed Harbi for a spot on the plane.

Ahmed Abdullah (Probably not going): Hasn't featured for Palestine since a May 2013 friendly vs. Qatar- did alright in that game but too many guys ahead of him at this point.

CENTER BACK

Abdelatif Bahdari (On the Plane): Not at his imperious best right now but will travel despite a lack of games for his club side- Al-Wihdat.

Haitham Dheeb (On the Plane): The national team makes plans according to his busy work schedule (really). Criminally underrated defender who deserves the opportunity to play abroad and earn a decent paycheck.

Javier Cohene (On the Plane): Will most likely force Dheeb to the bench. Fastest center back in the pool- and a threat on set pieces.

Daniel Kabir Mustafá (Probably Going): Hasn't played for the national team in 11 months due to club commitments. On club form, though, he's probably the best CB Palestine has.

Omar Jarun (On the bubble): Odd man out? Palestine already have Bahdari and Mustafá in the fold- two very similar type defenders. His inability to play against Saudi Arabia and Vietnam this month (he cited personal reasons) means he'll have very little time to make an impression.

Tamer Salah (Probably not going): His competent performance versus Vietnam will have earned him a spot in camp (assuming Palestine takes a large contingent) but there are better center backs out there.

MIDFIELDERS

DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDERS

Khader Yousef (On the Plane): Approaching 50 caps- most capped outfield player in the pool.

Murad Ismail (On the Plane): Challenge Cup MVP- capable of putting in a tireless shift in the middle of the pitch.

Hesham Salhe (Probably Going): Was a long shot coming into the month. Man of the Match performance versus Vietnam changes that.

Houssam Wadi (On the bubble): Sent home after the India friendly- Salhe and maybe even Abu Jazar have the edge at the moment.

Mahmoud Sheikhqasem (Probably not going):  Has done less in a national team shirt than the other five players ahead of him. Maybe in 2019.

Ahmed Meary (Not going): Was in the squad for the October friendlies. Sent home after the India match.

WINGERS/ATTACKING MIDFIELDERS

Abdelhamid Abuhabib (On the Plane): Great provider of the final ball- pops up in scoring positions as well.

Ahmed Maher (On the Plane): Indifferent performance at the Challenge Cup but has been red-hot as of late. Great set up for Palestine's third goal vs. Vietnam

Husam Abu Saleh (Probably Going): Status called into question with a disastrous performance vs. Saudi Arabia. Saved face with cameo vs. Vietnam.

Ismail Amour (Probably Going): Imad Zatara is out injured and Amour is showing flashes of his old self- could potentially overtake Abu Saleh in the pecking order.

Hilal Musa (On the bubble): Should be on the plane, in my humble opinion; was a conspicuous absence in the last squad list.

Tamer Seyam (On the bubble): Has yet to replicate WBPL form with national team

Adham Abu Rwais (Probably not going): See: Seyam, Tamer.

Mahmoud Abuwardeh (Not going): Great prospect for 2019.

Imad Zatara (Not going): Injured.

FORWARDS

Ashraf Nu'man (On the Plane): Only question will be how to best deploy him- as an inverted winger? A roaming attacking mid? Or as a number 9?

Mahmoud Eid (On the Plane): Opened up his account vs. Vietnam- fits the system perfectly with his hold up play and physical presence.

Imad Khalili (On the bubble): If he ever shows up- he'd be a near certain lock to be in the final 23.

Matías Jadue (On the bubble): Struggling for minutes with Antofagasta at Chile and still waiting to make his debut for Al-Fida'i. Scored in penalty shootout that delivered Antofagasta a semifinal berth in the Copa de Chile.

Khaled Salem (Probably not going): WBPL clubs have given up on him as a forward. Great physical characteristics but the mental aspect of his game (beating offside traps) still not there.

Recap: Ahmed El-Hassan reshuffled his lineup for Palestine's second game in four days. In fact, the only players to start both November friendlies were Murad Ismail and Abdelatif Bahdari. Despite being perfectly capable of keeping the ball for long stretches, Palestine seemed to have agreed on a predetermined tactic of playing long diagonal balls in the direction of Ashraf Nu'man and wingers Ismail Amour and Tamer Seyam. Despite dribbling into threatening areas- Al-Fida'i had trouble locating the final pass with Seyam the main culprit with regards to bad decision making. Vietnam's speed gave Palestine a whole host of problems.

Vietnam was unlucky not to open the score 10 minutes in- Toufic Ali's run out was perhaps not the best idea but the Wadi Al-Nes 'keeper managed to parry away the lobbed attempt from Lê Công Vinh in the most unorthodox of fashions. Hesham Salhe had a chance to open the score a mere minute later but he blasted his shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat. The first half petered out and it seemed that Vietnam would soon find away to punish Palestine for their sloppy play.

Palestine managed to turn it around in the second half. Seyam and Amour swapped wings which helped boost the performance somewhat and in the 56th minute one of those long balls (from Abu Jazar) found Hesham Salhe who beat the offsides trap and a desperate goalkeeper before slotting it to Abuhabib who had an empty net to shoot at.

Salhe would turn from provider to plunderer doubling Palestine's lead with a great volley off a poorly cleared corner in the 70th minute.

The long ball proved fruitful again with Ahmed Maher latching on to Abuhabib's ball and setting up Mahmoud Eid's first ever international goal.

Vietnam got a deserved consolation goal late on to ensure that the scoreline didn't flatter Palestine too much.

What I liked: After relying exclusively on Abuhabib and Ashraf Nu'man to score all the goals during the AFC Challenge Cup it seems that some other players have found their scoring form. Ahmed Maher notched five during the Peace Cup, while Murad Ismail, Khader Yousef, Javier Cohene, Abed Jaber, Abdelatif Bahdari, Hesham Salhe, and Mahmoud Eid have all scored their first goals with the national team.

What I didn't like: I'm not sure why there was an insistence on playing long-ball today. It worked in the end but I felt it also provided Vietnam opportunities to attack us and our defence was put under unnecessary duress in the absence of its fastest central defenders (Cohene and Dheeb). Yes, we managed to beat Veitnam at its own game but I don't think this tactic will work against any of our group stage opponents in two months' time.

Man of the Match: Hesham Salhe. Excelled in midfield and provided added creativity in the midfield. Scored a great first international goal. A shoe-in for the preliminary roster of 50 players in one month's time and you would think that he has an inside track on Houssam Wadi and Sheikhqasem for the final 23.

What's Next: Palestine have December Friendlies against Uzbekistan (14/12) and China (21/12). The pre-Asian Cup training camp will most likely get underway after the culmination of the WBPL's 11th matchday on November 27th.

Full Highlights & Recap after the jump...

Goals: Al-Hazazzi 34' Al-Muwallad 55'

Highlights (All of Palestine's scoring chances)

Recap: Saudi Arabia jumped on defensive errors either side of halftime to secure their first ever friendly victory of the Juan Ramon Lopez Caro era. Palestine came into the match with a slightly altered look as Khaled Salem earned his first start since March 2013; playing in a two striker formation alongside debutant Mahmoud Eid. Palestine were lucky to have early defensive lapses go unpunished, as huge gaps were left between the defensive and midfield lines that allowed the always quick Saudis too much space to operate. Palestine offered some attacking verve down the left flank as Maher and Jaber combined well but they were being run ragged on the other side of the pitch. A costly error by Husam Abu Saleh put Tayseer Jasim into acres of space beyond the guise of Raed Fares. He expertly beat an on-rushing Bahdari and Ramzi Saleh before knocking the ball back to Al-Hazazzi for an easy finish. Ahmad El-Hassan's only change at halftime paid immediate dividends- Ashraf Nu'man replaced Khaled Salem- and within four minutes the Saudi-based player created two scoring chances; the second of which really should have been slotted home by Mahmoud Eid.

With Palestine looking far more vibrant Saudi Arabia again managed to exploit Palestine's right side again. Capitalizing on Husam Abu Saleh's failure to track back, Al-Hazzazi turned provider- clipping a ball over the defence and allowing the scary fast Muwalad to latch onto the ball while running at close to full speed.

A chance at a late consolation via a set piece was headed over the bar by Abdelatif Bahdari. While not unexpected, Ahmad El-Hassan will perhaps feel a little aggrieved that Palestine's positive spells didn't translate to shots on target and goals. The result leaves him with a lot to contemplate ahead of the Vietnam encounter.

What I liked: Abed Jaber is a beast. He has nine caps to his name but was one of the best players on the day. He handled his defensive responsibilities and also contributed a lot going forward.

What I didn't like: The 4-4-2. I don't think this formation suits us at all- it asks too much of Khader Yousef and Murad Ismail. Neither player is adept at creating chances, they are facilitators- their main role is to win the ball, protect the defence and play simple passes. It was painfully obvious that the the middle are in the attacking third was being neglected. When Ismail or Yousef did pop up there, they were unable to conjure up something productive. From a defensive standpoint, I don't think you can play a 4-4-2 without pressing and staying compact. We aren't a fit enough team to press for 90 minutes and by the look of Husam Abu Saleh- it seems that some of  our midfielders aren't used to the added defensive responsibility.

Uniform Watch: Palestine donned red shirts and black shorts, provided by Legea, but were wearing tracksuits from Peak. It amazes me how the team clearly needs an apparel supplier and have continuously ignored at least two companies in their attempt to provide them with a kit sponsorship.

Next: Palestine is set to play Vietnam in Hanoi on November 9th at 1000 GMT.

Preview: Saudi Arabia vs. Palestine (International Friendly)

With an international friendly win-less streak stretching back to 2012 (and a pretty bad decade), the Saudis will be looking to get a win against Palestine to gain some momentum ahead of the GCC cup. Palestine is out to show it can butt heads with the continent's top teams. Read more below to get some context to what should be a good game for the neutrals too.

GAME INFORMATION
When: November 6th, 2014
Kickoff: 1530 GMT
Where: Prince Mohammed Bin Fahed Stadium, Dammam, Saudi Arabia
TV: Saudi Sports

Saudi football has had better days with a 1980s golden era that culminated in a 1994 World Cup debut in which they reached the Round of 16, which they followed with a third Asian Cup title in 1996. Over time, the Green Falcons increasingly looked like a shadow of their former selves however even with a disastrous World Cup showing in 2002, they were still considered one of Asia's "Big 4" sides (alongside Japan, South Korea and Iran) through 2006 where they were still ableto lean on the prestige of being the Arab world's World Cup representative. However, that was not to last as the trip towards rock bottom was accelerated.

Australia's admission into the AFC meant that the "Big 4" were now the "Big 5". Saudi's place in the Big 5 even became questionable as Asia's middle tier sides began catching up. Surely enough, the Saudis failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, failed to get out of the group stage in the 2011 Asian Cup, and didn't even make it to the second round of 2014 World Cup Qualifiers (Frank Rijkaard couldn't fix that!).

The continuous decline from the glory days of the 80s and early 90s highlighted inherent flaws in Saudi football and things had to get shaken up. For the first time, the Saudi Football Federation was restructured so that an elected civilian took charge (not exactly the most commonplace of things in the country).

Former Real Madrid and Spain U21 manager Juan Lopez Caro, who at the time was a technical advisor to the team, took over from Frank Rijkaard after the latter was sacked. Caro was initially meant to be an interim coach while the SAFF looked for a new man for the job, however after positive showings in the first two Asian Cup qualifying matchdays, he was signed for a longer term.

Saudi Arabia qualified to the 2015 Asian Cup after finishing first place in their group which included Iraq and China and have been preparing with a series of friendlies at home and abroad. Most recently, a 1-1 draw with Uruguay last month gave Saudi fans hope things were on getting back on the up and up. However, that hope was all but dashed after the team could only muster the same result against Lebanon.

The last time Palestine and Saudi faced on a senior level was in the 2012 Arab Nations Cup group stage (2-2)

Lopez Caro has named what is for all purposes a full strength Saudi squad as he will carry on with the same group of players to the GCC cup, and presumably a little further down the line to the Asian Cup. Notable is the absence of 36 year old veteran Hussain Abdulghani who has had somewhat of a late renaissance.

Under Lopez Caro, Saudi Arabia has played a 4-5-1 with a reliance on skillful central midfielders and wingers to build up attack. Like most Gulf teams, the Saudis play a fast paced game. Striker Naif Hazazi can be absolutely deadly in the air which is why you'd see a readiness from Saudi players to lob the ball into the box from just about anywhere. Lopez Caro is yet to lock in a starting XI, which observers note is negatively affecting the harmony of the team. Judging by their last friendly against Lebanon, they have a predictability to their build-up of play which enables frequent interceptions from defenders, in addition to underwhelming finishing.

To beat a team like Saudi, you have to take the game to them while maintaining solidity in the back line (Western Sydney Wanderers bus parking hardly works on the international level). Bahdari will be counted on to neutralize aerial balls and I expect the double pivot of Khader Yousef and Murad Ismail to be deployed in the midfield to reinforce the defense against cutting through balls. Abdullah Jaber will really be tested in left back in a battle against Yasser Al Shahrani who displayed his skills - albeit futilely - with Al Hilal in the ACL final.

If there is any point of weakness Palestine can exploit, its the shaky defense (two own goals in the last two games!), and in particular the wing backs - and with Hussam Abu Saleh and Ismail Amour on deck, damage could be done. I would expect Ashraf Nu'man to play a more central role, supporting Mahmoud Eid who will make his debut (most interested to see how this guy does).
