Recap: This was a practice game for both sides in every sense of the word. Palestine and Lebanon combined to produce a mere two shots on goal in the first half. The crowd had to wait 40 minutes before witnessing a corner kick for either side. It seemed that both teams were more concerned with avoiding injury or making a mistake that could cost them a place in the starting lineup.

Abdel Nasser Barakat steered away from any radical changes to the side that faced Malaysia two months ago. Abuhabib replaced the absent Mahmoud Eid in the 'hole' while Haitham Dheeb partnered Tamer Salah in defence where there were two other changes: Alexis Norambuena lined up in his natural position as a right back while Fadi Salbees was deployed at left back.

The extended preparation period seems to have served Palestine well, a lot of the common mistakes that plagued the team in their first two qualifiers are now no longer an issue. Palestine rarely made mistakes in possession, and when they did, there was sufficient cover or the awareness to commit a tactical foul. Defensively, the team looks a lot better with Haitham Dheeb marshaling affairs. He may not have the most impressive footballing CV but he is the best defender in the pool and might be one of Palestine's best players full stop.

Lebanon's best chance of the first half came off a well-worked free kick. The ensuing effort from Youssef Mahmoud flying into the arms of Toufic Ali. Palestine were livelier at the end of the half, Abuhabib popped up outside the box and and sent a curling effort to Mahdi's far post which was comfortably dealt with. Minutes later, Haitham Dheeb came agonizingly close to connecting with a Tamer Seyam corner kick.

The pace of the game picked up in the second half- Lebanon hand a handful of half chances from set pieces. While the inclusion of Jonathan Cantillana seemed to spark Palestine to life- the best chance of the game fell to Matías Jadue who burst into the box but couldn't manufacture an effort good enough of seriously challenging Bitar in goal.

There was to be another debut on the day, with Amir Abu Nahyeh replacing Jadue with just over 10 minutes to go. Going forward, his role in this team will most likely be that of a super sub. His speed and hustle caused problems for Lebanon's centerbacks and he came close to scoring the winner off a set piece in the game's final moments.

What I liked: Palestine were solid and organized. Lebanon had trouble breaking into the final third and when they did they were tracked back, harried, and harassed.

What I didn't like: Palestine's attacking midfielders were not on their game today. Mar'aba and Seyam were excellent against Malaysia but they were practically invisible today and were not proactive enough in their approach. As they flattered to deceive, the door is wide open for the likes of Jaka Ihbeisheh and Mahmoud Eid to claim their place in the lineup.

Debutants: Fadi Salbees was solid and steady on the left flank. His one error came in the 13th minute when a Lebanese player was allowed to send in a menacing cross but he was impervious after that lapse in concentration. Unfortunately for Salbees, the BeIn Sports commentator kept referring to him as Iyad and then repeatedly butchered his surname- eventually settling on 'SellPepsi' as his favored pronunciation.

Jonathan Cantillana is the prototypical Chilean midfielder- combative, quick feet, great in possession- depending how the next week goes do not be surprised if you see him replace Abuhabib as the starter.

Amir Abu Nahyeh showed enough in his 12 minutes on the pitch but you'll probably only see him vs. UAE if Palestine are chasing a goal.

What's Next: Palestine travel to Amman and will then cross into Palestine by land- they will be met by the following players: Javier Cohene, Jaka Ihbeisheh, and Mahmoud Eid. They will have a week's preparation ahead of their next qualifier as they have a bye the next match day (September 3rd).

Preview: Palestine face Lebanon in Sidon ahead of UAE qualifier

Palestine 4:0 Rot Weiss Frankfurt

A two week camp in Frankfurt, Germany saw the national team take in two Bundesliga games in between three scrimmage wins against Regionalliga opposition by score lines of 2-0, 2-1, and 4-0, respectively.

The experience of watching top class football and visiting the trophy-laden headquarters of the German FA should have the team in a positive mindset ahead of their clash against the Emiratis on the 8th of September. The scrimmages will also have helped the team gel- many of Abdel Nasser Barakat's charges hadn't played international football at this level before the game against Saudi Arabia in June.

For all the positives, Palestine's German expedition ended on a sour note. A reoccurrence of Ahmed Harbi's calf injury means the captain will not be able to take part against the UAE- joining him on the sidelines are Ahmed Maher and Mahmoud Abu Wardeh. To compound problems, Mohammed Abu Khamis, Mohammed Yameen, and Mus'ab Battat are in a race against time to be ready for the crucial qualifier next month.

Palestine's trip to Beirut was also delayed by 24 hours due to visa issues. Al-Fid'ai is set to take on Lebanon in Sidon on Monday at 1700 local time.

The side will be reinforced by the arrivals of three players currently plying their trades in Chile: Pablo Tamburrini (San Luis), Matías Jadue (Deportes Santa Cruz), and the newly discovered Jonathan Cantillana (Palestino).

All three players should figure prominently in the friendly against Lebanon. Cantillana, who plays as a holding midfielder, faces competition from Khader Yousef, Mohammed Darwish, and Pablo Tamburrini for playing time.

Given the fact they have trained for more than two weeks together- Barakat will most likely opt to field a backline of Alexis, Salah, Dheeb, and Jaber. This should be the combination that starts against the UAE, with the exception of Salah who will most likely make way for Javier Cohene (Atletico CP, Portugal).

How Barakat sets up the rest of his team remains to be seen. The team shifted from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 after the loss against Saudi Arabia and bagged six goals as a result but there will most likely be another tactical shift in preparation for the UAE.

Players who were not in the camp will have to make their case to unseat those who impressed.

For their part, Lebanon are preparing for a crucial qualifier of their own with Korea Republic coming to town next month. Their preparations got underway against Iraq last week and they showed some spark against the Lions of Mesopotamia only to cough up two goals inside the final ten minutes of the game.

The Lebanon test should prove useful for Palestine and should serve as an indicator as to how ready this team is to challenge for top spot in Group A.

Format Kompetisi untuk Babak Kualifikasi Piala Dunia FIFA 2018 Zona Oceania (OFC) adalah sebagai berikut:

Ada 4 Negara/ Tim yaitu Samoa Amerika, Kepulauan Cook, Samoa, dan Tonga, yang akan saling bertemu dengan Format Setengah Kompetisi/ Turnamen, yang digelar di satu negara. Tim Pemenang akan lolos ke Putaran Kedua (Second Round) Kualifikasi Piala Dunia FIFA 2018 Zona Oceania (OFC), dan juga lolos ke Putaran Final Piala Oceania 2016 (OFC Nations Cup).

Palestine start prep for crucial UAE qualifier in Germany

Palestine get training underway in Frankfurt

Palestine flew to Frankfurt this past weekend to start the preparations for next month's crunch 2018 FIFA World Cup/2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against group favorites UAE. The camp, which will run until the end of the month, will pit Palestine against teams from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga.

National team manager Abdel Nasser Barakat is expected to join the team later on this week after attending a summit for national team bosses in Kuala Lumpur.

This trip comes on the heels of an internal training camp that featured a larger pool of players. It's unclear if any additions from the domestic player pool would be made to this squad.

Palestine's foreign contingent will not be participating in this camp as most of them are otherwise engaged with their clubs. One player, Sweden-based Ahmed Kanjo, was with the national team in the West Bank but has since been forced to pull out with an injury.

According to Kamel Gharbi of Korapal, Alexis Norambuena has been invited to participate in the two week expedition. The right back has been without a club since GKS Belchatow released him during the close season. An achilles injury saw him miss all but the initial six games of the season including Palestine's maiden AFC Asian Cup voyage.

'Al-Koori' takes in Mainz v. Ingolstadt

The team has taken to its surroundings well- they attended Mainz's Bundesliga opener vs. Ingolstadt on Saturday. Despite not being able to avail of their services at the current moment, it's widely expected that the team will use this opportunity to touch base with Amir Fallahen of Freiburg and Mohammed Darwish (Hannover 96 u19).

Palestine's relatively young team should be well served by this camp- pitting their relative youth against German sides should serve as excellent preparation for UAE. If the players can absorb the intensity of the training camp and the finer points of playing disciplined positionally then Palestine can reasonably expect a result next month. Ahead of the trip back home, Palestine will face Lebanon in Saida on the 31st of August.

For their part, the UAE will start training on August 23rd but will be without seven Al-Ahli players due to their participation in the Asian Champions League until August 26th. Two days later they'll host Myanmar in a tuneup before hosting Malaysia on the 3rd of September.

Ahli Al-Khaleel lift Palestine Cup in dramatic fashion

Ahli Al-Khaleel captain Khaldoun Al-Halman lifts Palestine Cup

For the first time in 15 years, Palestine has a champion that represents all professional clubs operating in the West Bank and Gaza. The match itself was touch and go and both legs only took place after delays and at the behest of FIFA, UEFA, and the AFC who intervened to stop Israel from preventing the freedom of movement of the players.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg it seemed that Ittihad Shujaiyah had done enough to manage a positive result in their favor. Over the second half of that game, they were the better side as their West Bank counterparts struggled with the heat and conditions of the game.

For Ittihad Shujaiyah, the return fixture wasn't an away game at all. Fans of rival Shabab Al-Khaleel flooded the Ali Bin Hussein Stadium in Hebron to cheer for the Gazans, preferring them to represent Palestine in Asian competition in 2016.

Wael Mresat's first half goal gave Ahli a well-deserved advantage in the first half but a lack of clinical finishing left the door open for Shujaiyah. A perfectly good goal by Yassar Sabaheen was ruled out for offside early in the second half. The Gazan cup and league champions kept pushing and 20 minutes from time they were duly rewarded for their persistence with Ala'a Attieh scoring a critical away goal.

The fairy tale ending was not to be for Ittihad Shujaiyah. Deep into injury time Ahmed Maher's curling free kick sent Ahli Al-Khaleel onto Asia. It was an especially dramatic finish especially considering that the man of the moment had refused to be subbed out a mere 10 minutes earlier.

Ahli Al-Khaleel & Ittihad Shujaiyah meet with AFC Cup berth on the line

Inconsistent geography is one of the particularities of Palestinian football. Clubs that are top tier clubs compete in the West Bank, Gaza, and even Israeli leagues. So when it comes to determining the country's champion things can become quite tricky.

Clubs competing in Gaza and the West Bank cannot compete against each other due to the realities on the ground. Gazan players face the same problems as the general public when it comes to entering and exiting the strip (the number of exit visas issued by Israel is around 4,000 a month- a tiny number considering the population of the area is well over 1 million) and this issue has prevented many a talented player from representing the national team.

It's been 15 years since a club from the West Bank travelled to Gaza (or vice versa, for that matter) making this cup final an important one for a multitude of reasons.

Background

For all intents and purposes, the PFA has elected to send WBPL clubs as representatives of Palestine at Asian competition. Palestine had participated in continental club football in previous iterations before the incorporation of the AFC Champions League in 2002 and the AFC Cup in 2004 in their current formats. Gaza's Khadamat Rafah were no match for Iraq's Al-Quwwa Al-Jawwiya in the 1999-2000 season but the following season Hilal Al-Quds managed to progress pass Al-Ahli Sanaa (Yemen) in the preliminary stage.

In 2001, Ittihad Shujaiyah hosted and beat Wehdat 2-1 in the first leg of an Asian Cup Winners' Cup preliminary (they would go on to lose the return leg 3-1).

Internal discord and the start-stop nature of club football in Palestine meant that it would be 10 years before a Palestinian club would grace the continental stage again.

When Palestinian clubs were invited back into the fold they were relegated to competing in the short-lived AFC President's Club. The PFA elected to send the WBPL to each edition- effectively relegating the Gazan league to the status of second tier on Palestine's football pyramid.

When the tournament was scrapped one slot in the preliminaries was set aside for Palestinian teams.

2015: A Banner Year

With Palestine's AFC Cup allocation increasing to 1.5 slots last year, Taraji Wadi Al-Nes did more than enough to prove that Palestinian clubs belonged at this level. In the end, the Bethlehem based club went undefeated at home and avoided defeat on four occasions- including a famous 1-0 win over Al-Shorta in Al-Ram.

They were nearly joined in the group stage by 2013/14 Palestine Cup champions Hilal Al-Quds who succumbed to a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of eventual quarterfinalists Al-Jaish (Syria).

This year the title of Palestine Cup Champions will be a little less of a misnomer. For the first time ever, the champion of Gaza will meet the champion of the West Bank. The stakes have never been higher with a place in the 2016 AFC Cup preliminaries on the line.

Outlook

Ahli Al-Khaleel Manager Stefano Cusin

In terms of preparedness, Ahli Al-Khaleel has had one of the best preseasons of any club in the region. They have strengthened their ranks by adding Fadi Zidan (who became the first Palestinian to score a brace in the AFC Cup last year) and Mahmoud Wadi to complement Khaldoun Al-Halman in attack.

Midfielder Roberto Kettlun who adeptly captained Hilal Al-Quds for the past four seasons will take up the same role for Ahli. In defense, national team stalwarts Ahmed Harbi and Abdallah Jaber should add an attacking verve on the flanks.

To further prepare for the upcoming challenges this season, Stefano Cusin took his side on a preseason tour of Italy. The Hebronites played against the likes of Bologna and Atalanta, they lost both matches 1-0 but showed some positive signs along the way. The question surrounding this team is not if they will win silverware but how many pieces of it do they stand to win.

For their part, Ittihad Al-Shujaiyah have done little in terms of reinforcing their squad. Their one move has been for the highly rated defender Maysara Al-Bawab. Furthermore, they will have to make due without key play Houssam Wadi after the PFA decided to prevent his participation due to the fact that he is still technically under contract with Al-Am'ary of the WBPL.

If Ittihad Al-Shujaiyah are to overcome the odds yet again, the side will have to take advantage of the vociferous atmosphere. If they can take a lead into the second leg of the tie then an upset might well and truly be on the cards.
