Palestinians Abroad: Islam Batran joins Wadi Degla

Yesterday witnessed one of the surprises of the transfer window. Islam Batran, a highly rated winger who has yet to earn his first international cap, signed with Wadi Degla of the Egyptian Premier League.

At 21, Batran will be given an opportunity to learn from veteran players such as Essam El-Hadary and will also be on show to Degla's sister clubs: Lierse and Arsenal.

He becomes the third Palestinians in the Egyptian Premier League alongside former national team captain El-Masry's Ramzi Saleh and current national team captain Abdelatif Bahdari of Talaea El-Geish.

Details of the contract are not immediately known but the former Ahli Al-Khaleel star wasted no time in asserting his credentials- scoring the opening goal on his unofficial debut; a 7-1 rout of Al-Nuba Club

Ashraf Nu'man announces international retirement

Ashraf Nu'man took to his Facebook page yesterday to announce his decision to retire from the Palestinian national team. It has been a tumultuous 18 months for the man once considered to be the best- but least known- talents in Asia. A particularly difficult season last year saw the Bethlehem born attacker leave Wehdat after six months with no goals to his name and a move to Saudi Pro League bottom feeders Hajer hardly proved to be the right change of scenery.

The 30-year old hangs up his boots as Palestine's joint-top leading goal scorer with 14 goals in 53 caps.

He released the following statement on the issue:

"After a period of deep thinking over the past week, I have decided to announce my retirement from international football after a period of nine years that were the most beautiful, amazing, and fulfilling years.... The reason for my retirement are due to personal reasons that I cannot reveal that prevent me from fully committing to the national side..."

More after the jump...

He first broke into the national side in 2007 and although it took him 15 caps to notch his first goal there were unmistakable flashes of brilliance. Most notably an audacious effort from midfield in a 2012 Challenge Cup qualifier against the Philippines that hit the crossbar.

His time with former national team manager Jamal Mahmoud proved to be the apex of his career, with 13 goals in 30 games en route to 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualification.

Under the stewardship of Abdel-Nasser Barakat, Ashraf Nu'man was accused of feigning injury for the first World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia. The national team staff then took the decision to hold him out of the next three qualifying matches.

In the return fixture, he missed a sitter that could have given Palestine a crucial win over the group leaders.

More controversy brewed as the forward was unexpectedly chopped from Palestine's starting XI vs. UAE in March despite having trained with the starters the day before the match.

What appears to be his final game- the 7-0 win over Timor Leste- drew the ire of many supporters for his perceived selfish and wasteful play.

In his place, Abdel Nasser Barakat is expected to count on domestic options such as Tamer Seyam & Sameh Mar'aba as well as the likes of Jaka Ihbeisheh, Jonathan Cantillana, and Ahmed Awad.

Barakat announces preliminary squad to face Tajikistan

Palestine manager Abdel Nasser Barakat has revealed a list of 27 domestically based players set to take part in a training camp ahead of next month's friendly vs. Tajikistan.

Headlining the list are defender Alaa Abu Saleh- the former Bnei Sakhnin captain and fellow Sakhninite midfielder Hamad Ghanayem who are among 11 Shabab Al-Khaleel players to be included in the list. These two players could prove to be valuable additions to the national team- with over 400 Ligat Ha'al games under their belt.

Former Chile U20 striker Rodrigo Gattas is also in the squad for the first time along with six other Hilal Al-Quds players- the second largest contingent in the side.

Players plying their trade abroad are expected to be called up on the 30th of this month. With the game against Tajikistan due to be held in Dora, it seems the FA has scrapped plans to train in Algeria for logistical reasons.

Abdallah Jaber's contract with Arab Contractors voided

After agreeing a three year deal with Egyptian Premier League side Arab Contractors last week, Palestine left back Abdallah Jaber has voided his contract.

The impasse was a result of the player not being issued a copy of his contract- a basic right that FIFA's rules and regulations ensures to all players. Jaber took to social media to clarify exactly what happened posting pictures of the signing ceremony as well as his successful medical.

Jaber (L) signing for Arab Contractors
The details of his three year contract would have seen the 23 year-old make 950,000 EGP ($107,000) in his first season which would rise to 1.05 million EGP ($118,000) in his second season and finally rising to 1.2 million EGP ($135,000) in his final season. The contract also guaranteed the player living expenses plus the cost of airfare for two yearly trips to Palestine.

Additional clauses included a 50,000 EGP ($5,600) bonus in the event the team finished in Egypt's top four and a 100,000 EGP ($10,200) should the club receive a foreign transfer request for his services.

With the contract being paid out in dollars, as opposed to the fast devaluating local currency, Arab Contractors were reticent to be held liable to the amounts offered. In the past days, the Cairo based club had reached an agreement to sign a player from the second division at a fraction at the cost- awarding his club the right to play around 10 games on their home ground in Nasr City.

After refusing to issue the player a copy of the signed contract the club took the decision to unilaterally void his contract.

Despite interest from other Egyptian sides- most notably ENPPI and Ittihad Alexandria the left back has stated he will not consider any offers from the Egyptian league.

Jaber will return to Palestine and suit up for Al-Ahli who had registered him for the 2016/17 season. It's worth noting that the Hebron-based side had waived their right to a transfer fee in order to facilitate the move despite the fact that the player still had a year to run on his contract.

Palestinians Abroad: Mahmoud Eid signs for Allsvenskan side Kalmar FF

Kalmar FF announced the transfer on social media last night

The most recent transfer in a flurry of moves involving Palestinian players comes from the old continent. Mahmoud Eid will become the only active national team player playing in the first tier of a European league. He is the eighth national team player to be involved in a transfer to a foreign league in 2016.

More details after the jump...

Eid whose raw talent has been touted since turning pro in 2012 with Vasalunds has steadily developed over the last five years. It hasn't been meteoric, but rather steady improvement, Hammarby's youth side gave him his start and then it was off to Vasalunds where he was an impact sub (19/31 appearances came off the bench).

He became an unquestioned started for Nyköping when he first signed for them halfway through the 2013 season (47/48 appearances were from the start) and his last season was a case study in consistency as he racked up goals and assists with ease.

Atvidabergs FF was the next destination and despite his lack of Superettan experience it was clear from the first match day that Eid would be the focal point of their attack.

Eight goals in the first 14 games to start the season made him the highest scorer from open play in the league.

Another jump in level awaits Mahmoud Eid in the Allsvenskan but he should be able to force his way into the starting lineup given his versatility. Kalmar FF have committed to build their foreseeable future around Eid- tying him up for the next three and a half seasons.

Kalmar FF sporting director Thomas Andersson-Borstam has confirmed that the striker could feature as early as Sunday against league leaders Malmö FF.

Palestinians Abroad: Abdallah Jaber moves to Arab Contractors

Abdallah Jaber (c) presented at Arab Contractors' team headquarters.

After a year filled with speculation, Palestine's left back has finally secured a much sought after move to a foreign club.

Reports had linked Abdallah Jaber to various Egyptian clubs over the past 12 months. El-Ahly, Zamalek, ENPPI, were all rumored to be interested in signing the player.

More details after the jump...

As recently as this week a move to ENPPI seemed imminent but Arab Contractors (El Mokawoloon El Arab) swooped in at the last moment to clinch the Tayibe-born player's signature.

Jaber will move on a free transfer and his three year contract is believed to be in the region of $120,000/year.

He becomes the second Palestinian player to play for Arab Contractors- following in the footsteps of Mohammed Samara.

Arab Contractors are renowned for working with young talent and are responsible for the development of Mohammed Salah (Roma) and Mohammed El-Nenny (Arsenal) both of whom who were playing in the side just four years ago.

The 23-year old has already amassed 22 caps and a goal in just over two years with the national team. Domestically, he has proven to be an iron man with over 60 starts for Hilal Al-Quds and Ahli Al-Khaleel since 2013.

He was voted Palestine's best player of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup by Football Palestine and has played every minute of Palestine's 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Abdallah Jaber will wear the number 27 jersey with his new club. He is one of three Palestinians now plying his trade in Egypt's top tier alongside Ramzi Saleh (El-Masry) and Abdelatif Bahdari (El-Entag El-Harbi).

Shukran, Peto! Kettlun calls time on 15-year career

Roberto Kettlun with the national team during the 2012 Nakba Cup
When a pro athlete calls time on his career his accomplishments are usually summed up in the amount of minutes played, trophies won, and records set. Every so often, however, an athlete's body of work can't really be summed up by an aggregation of of stat sheets.

Roberto Kettlun is one of those types of athletes. A cursory glance of his CV will show that he won 23 caps, scored three goals, and played professionally in Chile, Greece, and Italy before a four year stint in Palestine's WBPL. His time in Palestine was truly revolutionary; as the first established national team star to move to the new league he encouraged others to join him and help the league develop.

Kettlun elected to represent Palestine as a 21-year old. An assertive decision for a footballer with the opportunity to play for an established footballing power at the national team level. Oftentimes, smaller nations come to rely on talent bred abroad but the sentiment amongst fans is that these players are simply opportunists. It was clear from the beginning that Peto was not one of these players.

"It was a little bit difficult because I was playing at a good level with the possibility of joining the full [Chilean] national team," he said in a 2014 interview.
"It was not sure but it was a chance but then I got the opportunity to come here to the Middle East and my father was very enthusiastic because it's the Palestinian way.
"He told me you should go; you have this opportunity in your hand and the other one maybe yes or maybe not and plus it has a symbolic meaning for all the family."
"From that very first tournament in 2002 I knew how special this opportunity was," he said.
Fans really took to Roberto who showed unbridled passion as he bamboozled defences at the 2002 Arab Nations Cup. His combination play with players who were cultivated domestically was seamless and his mark on the team of the early noughties is clearly defined. Kettlun was an integral part of a side that helped transform Palestine from plucky minnow to a respectable member of the Asian middle class.

He made history at club level as well, becoming the first Palestinian national team player to play in a European first division side when he joined Skoda Xanthi in 2003-04. His stint was cut short in a move that endeared him further to the fans- refusing a request to turn down national team call ups while with the Greek side.

For a follow up act, he marshaled the national team to its biggest ever win in a World Cup qualifier scoring twice in an 8-0 demolition of Chinese Taipei. Two months later, his sumptuous free kick equalizer against Iraq sent Palestine to the summit of their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.

Internal chaos within the PFA robbed fans the chance to see Peto don the national team shirt in his prime between 2006 and 2012.

A brief return to the national team showcased his influence in different realms. In a more withdrawn midfield position, Kettlun was adept at settling play and changing pace with tidy passes. His involvement with Jamal Mahmoud's side might have been limited but his presence was acutely felt as he played a key role in South American recruitment and mentoring younger players at home.

Footballers who have been lucky enough to be exposed to his tutelage are imbibed with ambition and confidence and their professional approach to their craft is a fry cry from the attitude that existed amongst some players only a generation ago.

If you ask a dozen fans about their favorite Roberto Kettlun story you are likely to get a dozen different answers. There's no shortage of sporting memories- with the aforementioned big time national team goals, seven domestic championships, and signature Panenka penalty kick conversions- but the memories tend to not be associated with these accomplishments. Many fans have a favorite personal moment with the player, because he always took the time to speak to anyone who cared about Palestine and Palestinian football as much as he did.

His time as an athlete may be coming to an end but it's quite clear that Peto's influence will continue to be felt for years to come. For now, all we can say is thank you, gracias, shukran for an incredible journey, for indelible moments, and for revolutionizing football in Palestine.
